What Is That Smell In Panama City?

Sometimes there is a horrible smell surrounding Springfield, Parker, Callaway, and Panama City - it depends on which way the wind is blowing. You can't smell it everyday, but when you do it is hard to be outside. I remember when I first moved to the area we hadn't smelled it for the first two weeks here. We went out to run an errand and the smell seeped into my car and the whole family was gagging. We went into the store and asked the employees "What is that SMELL?" No one knew what we were talking about, so maybe the locals are just used to it.
The current smell comes from the Arizona Chemical Plant, however historically both the chemical plant and the paper mill have been sources of stench in Panama City.
The paper mill in Panama City, Florida, was operated by the WestRock Company, formerly known as MeadWestvaco. The mill announced it would be closing its doors June 6, 2022. This mill location was one of many within the company and had been in operation since the early 1940s. The mill produced a variety of paper products, including linerboard and containerboard, which are used to make corrugated boxes for shipping goods.
The Arizona Chemical plant, located adjacent to the paper mill, produces chemicals used in the production of adhesives, coatings, and other products. The plant was acquired by Kraton Corporation in 2016 and continues to operate in the region.
Over the years, the operations of the chemical plant have been a source of concern for some residents due to odors and emissions. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has been monitoring the air quality in the region and working with the companies to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
In recent years Kraton has invested in technologies to reduce emissions and improve environmental performance. Kraton has invested in new equipment to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
The ongoing efforts to improve environmental performance and reduce emissions could potentially have a positive impact on property values in the region. A cleaner environment and reduced odors could make the area more attractive to residents and businesses, which could drive demand for real estate.
