Ways to Improve Your Credit Score

by Jessica Henrichsen

Many people believe they cannot buy a home based on their credit score. There are lenders who will work with poor credit or teach you ways to improve your credit so you can get financing for a home purchase. Improving your credit score takes time and effort, but the following are some ways you can work towards better credit:

  1. Pay your bills on time: Your payment history is the most significant factor in your credit score. Make sure to pay your bills on time every month, including credit card payments, rent, utilities, and any other debts.

  2. Reduce your credit utilization ratio: Your credit utilization ratio is the amount of credit you're using compared to the total amount of credit you have available. Aim to keep your credit utilization ratio below 30%.

  3. Check your credit report: Review your credit report for any errors or fraudulent activity. Dispute any inaccuracies you find with the credit bureau.

  4. Keep old accounts open: The length of your credit history is also a factor in your credit score. Keep your oldest credit accounts open, even if you're not using them.

  5. Diversify your credit: Having a mix of credit types, such as a credit card, a car loan, and a student loan, can improve your credit score.

  6. Apply for new credit sparingly: Every time you apply for credit, it generates a hard inquiry on your credit report, which can lower your credit score. Only apply for new credit when necessary.

  7. Consider a secured credit card: If you're struggling to get approved for a traditional credit card, a secured credit card can help you build credit. With a secured card, you'll need to put down a deposit, which acts as collateral.

Remember that improving your credit takes time and patience. Make sure to consistently practice good credit habits and monitor your credit report regularly.
